”Cradles of culture, gardens of civilization”: Elementary schooling in Germany, 1900–1914. $49.99 This dissertation examines the elementary schools of late Imperial Germany as agents of socialization and “civilization” and arbiters of morals and manners, health and hygiene, that changed relations between the family, the community, and the state. Using the official regulations surrounding the schools, scholars have embedded the elementary school (Volksschule) in a master narrative of German history. This so-called Sonderweg neglects the lived experiences of the schools with all their attendant diversity, complexity, and conflict. Beginning inside the elementary school itself, this study argues that the impact of education was open ended and multifaceted. The state remained present and powerful at the Volksschule but schooling was also a social phenomenon, enmeshed in a web of shifting cultural and communal relations. Not only did government ministers determine educational policies and practices, so too did a variety of social groups as well as the Protestant and Catholic churches. There is no better indication of the diversity of German schools than the absence of a national education ministry before 1934.;This study takes an ethnographic approach to its subject, showing how the school’s rituals and rules, hierarchy of age and grade, splintering of information into separate subjects, and division of boys and girls, Protestants and Catholics, shaped the pupil’s ways of seeing and knowing. Focusing on Prussia and Saxony, it uses textbooks, lesson plans, the pedagogical press, didactic literature, memoirs, and school journals (Schukhroniken) to illustrate the ways in which the Volksschule and its teachers mediated ideas about the family, community, and the nation. Moral messages on cleanliness, thrift, punctuality, obedience, and order accompanied portraits of the Kaisers and patriotic texts. Pupils took field trips to local landmarks and celebrated the invented traditions of Sedan Day and the birthday of Wilhelm II. More than policies and prescriptions, the |

”Passion Killings:” A media and cultural perspective of intimate femicide in Botswana. $49.99 This study explores intimate femicide in Botswana, Africa, which is a country with a long peaceful history. This qualitative research explored a total of 114 media reports on intimate femicide (IF) in Botswana, which is widely known in the country as “Passion Killings.” There were 74 stories of IF and 40 stories of the public opinion on IF. The study used thematic analysis. Two newspapers, “Mmegi” and “The Voice,” were used as sources of data. The study was guided by feminist theory, empowerment theory and modernization theory. The analysis revealed the following themes: Media romanticizing IF, blaming the victim, excusing the perpetrator, awareness of couple violence by the family, triggering event, brutal murder, and danger posed to others. Views of the public regarding what contributes to IF included patriarchal social structure, modernization, empowerment of women, healthy relationships and media coverage that contributes to copycat homicide-suicide. In addressing IF in Botswana, the public suggested that there should be provision of education, revisitation of traditional conflict resolution strategies that were effective and use of professional counselling services.;The results of this study contribute to social work education in the following ways: International modernization could be taught to indicate how modernization of patriarchal societies can result in societal crisis as evidenced by passion killings in Botswana. Through social work education, societies going through modernization can be assisted to approach this process with less societal crisis and stress. While empowerment of women may lessen abusive situations for women, designing programs through social work education that empower both men and women may yield better results than programs that target women only. Mental health and counselling services for individuals going through relationship crisis are lacking in Botswana, and should be emphasised through social work education as being critical. |

… The Teacher’s Manual $19.99 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:CHAPTER III. PHYSICAL EDUCATION, CONTINUED. School Lots. It would be unreasonable to expect, that all the following suggestions on the subject of school lots and schoolhouses, however much they may be approved, will be universally, or even generally, carried into effect. In many instances, poverty will be pleaded as the excuse. But this cannot be an available plea. For, where the district is poor, the land is generally of trifling value ; and, as to the slight difference of expense between a good and a wretched schoolhouse, it certainly is not to be put in competition ‘ with the health of the children. Leaving entirely out of view the intellectual and moral evils connected with the inferior building, true economy would dictate the erection of a good structure, sufficiently spacious for the evolutions of the school and the health of its inmates. Our duty, however, is in no wise altered by this circumstance. If only a few school lots be arranged, a/eic schoolhouses be constructed, in a better taste than formerly, our design will be, in a great measure, accomplished. For the constant tendency of mankind is towards improvement. We never go backward. And it requires only a few good models, scattered through the country, to bring about, in a very short time, a manifest change for the better, every where. School lots should always be in a pleasant and healthful situation, and never less than half an acre in extent. The public road is, surely, a very improper, in fact, dangerous, place, for large groups of children at play ; and yet, if there be no ground attached to the schoolhouse, they must either use that, or trespass on the neighboring property,—a temptation to which we should be careful not to expose our youth, especially at school, where every evil influence should |
