The influenza A virus is a spherical virus that has a diameter of 85 nm.?
A typical virus is a packet of protein and DNA (or RNA) and can be spherical in shape. The influenza A virus is a spherical virus that has a diameter of 85 nm. If the volume of saliva coughed onto you by your friend with the Flu is 0.031 cm3 and 10−9 of that volume consists of viral particles, how many influenza viruses have just landed on you?
I suggest converting all of your measurements to meters first. 1 cm is .01 m, so 1 cm^3 is .01^3 = 10^-6 m^3. 85 nm is 85 x 10^-9 m. The volume of a sphere with radius r is (4/3)*pi*r^3. The radius is half the diameter. So use the given diameter to find the radius and then the volume of the virus. Multiply the given volume of saliva by the given fraction that consists of viral particles, and then divide by the volume of the virus to find the number of individual viruses.
